Grade Level: 3-4 Learning Goal/Objectives: · Students will use the right term/vocabulary to describe a person’s culture. I will continue to help student active their wanting to learn about cultures. · They will get a broader view on different world’s cultures. They will be able to identify different cultures. · I will create 4 children characters from United State of America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Students will get a sense of how different countries/cultures’ daily life looks like. Which includes 4 their children characters peers, school, family, house, food, clothes, community, interests/hobby. · Students will make connection and assumption about those cultures. Essential Questions: 1.Students will be questioned and answering these questions. 2.How do the new friends cultures are different than theirs? 3.What are the differences? From which part of the picture can you tell this? 4.How do we describe these picture use right terms? NCSS & NY State Standards NCSS Thematic Standards for culture and cultural diversity: · Provide students a cultural universals perspective. · Encourage learners to consider the connections between the assumption, beliefs, and values of a culture. · Identify a culture. · Use proper term to describe a culture NYS: · People of similar and different cultural groups often live together in world communities. · World communities have social, political, economic, and cultural similarities and differences. · All people in world communities need to learn and they learn in different ways. · Families in world communities differ from place to place. Materials/Resources: Elements of Culture PPT Pictures of 3 children characters Asian Culture African Culture European Culture Video Description of activities: · Students will have the labeling homework ready. · I will demonstrate how to organize the group of questions put into the same category on the board. · I will give students the chart and let them fill out. · I will go over all the categories, which describes a person. · I will group 4 seat partners as one group. They will read their description about their seat partner. They will discuss all the categories of the person’s description, and the student who was being described will lead the conversation. He or she will add more precise description about ‘himself or herself. · “Let’s see if you can use this category to describe your member in your group.” Students will rotate to describe 3 other members in their group. · “Now we all have a better understanding of each other. Can we use these categories to describe a country? Let’s try it.” · Students will stay in their group. They will pick a country to describe. · Students will present their descriptions. · “ All of you had done a great job. All the words you have used to describe the country can be put into a new category.” · Habits + Routines + Rules= Customs and Traditions Dialogue/language = Language Belief + Value=Religion Music + Dance=Arts and Literature Elements of Culture PPT. Culture and Cultural Diversity · I will introduce our new friends we saw from last class’s video. I will introduce our 4 children characters from United State of America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. · I will let students ask question from their “Question Sheet”. I will write down them on the board. · Showing this new friend’s Pictures of his/her Friends/peer, school, family, house, food, clothes, community, interests/hobby. · Meantime, I will cross out the questions being answered in those pictures. · After showing 4 children from different country. I will show students 3 children’s Friends/peer, school, family, house, food, clothes, community, interests/hobby. One at a time. So students can observe and explore the differences. · Showing students their similar age peers in different country/culture classrooms. So they can simple relate other children to themselves in a difference classroom settings. · Showing children of the world pictures. And I will guide them identify where these children come from on the map. Introduce briefly about their beliefs, customs, and traditions. Helping students tot relate and acknowledge different cultures. Assessments: · Students will follow the same format as we did for other 3 children characters. They will make a character who is from United States. · They will draw a character, and give him/her a name. They can draw his/her friends/peer, school, family, house, food, clothes, community, and interests/hobby based on the images or other resources they found. · Search cultural images to create this character’s life. Which include his/her friends/peer, school, family, house, food, clothes, community, and interests/hobby. · They will present this new friend to class. Homework · Next class I will focus teach on elements of culture in United States. · I will make 4 students a group. They will search for one specific element of culture of United State. They can bring images, videos, books, customs, objects and all other kinds of items. |
